adminEU-projecten, Kernthema Circulair, Project

projecttitel: SPLASH: Sustainable PoLymers from Algae Sugars and Hydrocarbons
projectnummer: AF-EU-13003
kernthema: circulair
looptijd: 2012 – 2017
projectleider: Maria Barbosa & Lolke Sijtsma
kennis instelling: Wageningen University & Research

SAMENVATTING

The main objective of SPLASH is to develop a new biobased industrial platform using microalgae as a renewable commercial feedstock for industrial (biochemical) compounds with potential applications in several industrial sectors (Chemical, Green materials, Food, Feed and Aquaculture). SPLASH will focus on the complete process chain including production, product optimization, recovery of (exo)polysaccharides and hydrocarbons from the green alga Botryococcus braunii and further hydrolysis, separation and conversion of sugars and hydrocarbons to renewable products such as polymers and aims to demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of biorefineries. The generated knowledge and developed tools and technologies are needed to (i) develop a new algal based Industrial Biotechnological sector for the manufacture of agrochemicals for bulk products, (ii) to improve the innovation process and move novel bio-based products and processes from laboratories to the market and  (iii) to contribute to reaching the goals for CO2 abatement and replacement of petrochemicals.
