Projecttitel: Sustainable flower transport from Kenya
Projectnummer: SMP-2131
Missie:
Land: Kenya
Looptijd: 2021
Budget: € 40.000
Projectleider: Ernst Woltering
Kennisinstelling: Wageningen University & Research

The aim of the project is to make an inventory in Kenya of the cultivation conditions (climate, fertilisation and crop protection management), postharvest treatments and product features (leaf morphological features and mineral status) to identify factors that are involved in the observed leaf and flower quality problems in roses following transport. In addition, a pilot intervention experiment will be performed in which a selection of different cultivars (genotypes) and differently cultivated or treated roses are shipped to the Netherlands in a reefer container after which quality of the product and effects of treatments will be analysed under standardized conditions mimicking the retail and consumer phases.
The outcome of the project will be an improved protocol for cultivation and postharvest handling of roses destined for sea shipment and a resulting follow-up project (PPS) or business case for establishing regular sea shipments of roses from Kenya to The Netherlands.
