Currently, over 80% of the Indian citizens are structurally protein deficient in various degrees. The Alternative Protein India (API) consortium has made the challenge of structurally reducing this protein deficiency as its goal. The consortium envisions to apply novel Dutch fermentation technologies to fortify local food products with essential protein, making healthy diets more affordable for the ones in need of it. The Seed Money Project of the Topsector serves to conduct initial feasibility studies on agricultural feed stocks, including waste streams, for this process and to form a consortium with local stakeholders. The ultimate goal of the API consortium is to start production of safe and affordable protein enriched products by Q3 2023 in an Indian-Dutch consortium and therewith to reduce the protein deficiency and related health concerns such as anemia.
