To date, residues of pesticides are found in certain animal feed ingredients and byproducts for which no legal limits are established in the current EC regulations. In that case, the legal limits in the original product, corrected with a processing (dilution or concentration) factor, are applied. To this end, lists of processing factors have been established by RIVM and BfR. However, these processing factors for certain combinations of pesticides – feed products are lacking.
This project aims to obtain more insights into the effects of processing and mixing of feed ingredients on the pesticide residue levels in plant based materials used for animal feed. To this end, experiments will be held during processing and samples will be collected prior and after processing. This project is innovative in that effect of processing will be investigated in pilot-scale, industrial-likesetting, providing not only information on the reduction/concentration of the pesticide residue levels but also on the variability between batches.
Results will provide the necessary scientific basis on effects of processing of plant-based feed ingredients on the concentrations of pesticide residue levels in the processed products. These results will provide a common basis for decision making by both the industry and competent authorities. Ultimately, the results will contribute to reducing economic losses by feed industry and to preventing from unnecessary exposure of animals and human.
