Samenvatting

  • Estimation/projection of the market potential for fresh fish consumption in South-West Nigeria (Lagos);
  • Feasibility of smallholder fish farming applying the “cage”-method with tilapia in natural waters;
  • Required investments, break-even analysis for smallholder farmers.

A Dutch company, Fleuren&Nooijen, produces tilapia at small-industrial scale, using the “innovative” cage-method, in a joint venture with Nigerian business partners. The business opportunity is to up scale the production to supply the vast Lagos market, requiring a large number of smallholder farmers and other Dutch companies to cover the complete supply chain (fingerlings, feed, equipment, management). The Dutch apply their innovative know-how and production expertise, the Nigerians produce.
