Summary

All countries and all sectors have to contribute in order to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To enable zero emission transport of perishable foodstuff across the world, also the refrigerated road transport sector has to transition from diesel to electricity as energy source for transport refrigeration. This necessity also applies to the fruit export from South Africa to Europe, primarily through the Dutch port of Rotterdam. The goal of this R&D project is to initiate a holistic approach on the development of zero emission transport refrigeration solutions. The expected impact of this project is that it will help to enable the transition to zero emission transport refrigeration.
