Samenvatting

Post-Harvest Loss (PHL) is a very big problem in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is estimated that 50% of all fruit and vegetables is spoiled before it reaches the consumers.

In Kenya, the vegetable sector is important in attaining food security and improving livelihood for smallholder farmers who produce 100% of the African vegetables and up to 70% of the Exotic and Asian vegetables. The major vegetables produced in Kenya are: Irish Potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, snow peas, kales, spinach, runner beans, French beans, carrots, broccoli, indigenous vegetables, and Asian vegetables. In terms of enterprise value per acre, tomatoes are the most lucrative, followed by cabbages and French beans.

The key objective of this project is to contribute to a more effective vegetable supply chain, with a focus on reducing post-harvest losses and adding value at both the smallholder farming- and at processor level. For practical reasons the project will focus on tomato in the first stage, which is the highest consumed vegetable in Kenya, both in direct consumption as well as in processing. In the second stage, mango, a major fruit product with high PHL will be explored. For both tomato and mango initial contacts have been established with supply chain partners in Kenya.

Leading organizations in the Sub-Sahara Africa region have expressed interest to support the aims of the project (processors, international donors), and see also potential of this breakthrough technology to develop scalable and impactful solutions to contribute to food & nutrition security with sourcing for regional/national products.
