Projecttitel: Recirculation aquaculture systems in Kenya
Projectnummer: SMP-2221
Land: Kenia
Looptijd: 2022
Budget: € 40.000
Projectleider: Katrine Soma
Kennisinstelling: Wageningen University & Research
The world is facing challenging of climate change, water shortage, as well as food and nutrition insecurity among a large share of the people living in Africa. While thousands of small scale fish farmers in Kenya make use of ponds, Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) can increase production per m3 more than 50 times. With climate neutral RAS, the use of land will decrease substantially, which can benefit biodiversity and nature purposes. The aim of this SEED project is to design resilient and affordable business models with RAS which are affordable and accessible to small scale fish farmers, with the aim to scale this business further. Not only will 1.000+ fish farmers and 10.000+ consumers involved benefit, but Kenyan and Dutch businesses will co-create solutions for green energy and make profits on highly future oriented initiatives. The composition and excellence of the consortium consists of a total of two Dutch businesses with expertise and experience in RAS in Kenya, and one Kenyan technology firm with expertise in aquaculture and high tech developments designed for affordable standards, as well as the Nyeri fish farmer cooperative and FOSPA (Kenya) who are working on a daily basis with the fish farmers. Besides Wageningen Economic Research leading this SEED project, having a track record in research and implementation of viable and resilient aquaculture businesses in the informal sector in Kenya, two Kenyan research institutes are involved with high level expertise in fish farming in Kenya.
