The starch producing sector in the EU is a growing agricultural sector and is increasingly depending on adding value to its products to retain a competitive position in the world market. Derivatisation of starch enables technical applications, for instance in adhesives, construction and textile. The starch industry is increasingly looking for ways to minimise the use of chemical auxiliary agents in such derivatisations and modifications.

This project aims to develop a more environmentally friendly reagent for the derivatisation of starch that if successful will half the amounts of chemicals required, and develop technology to synthesise this reagent from biobased feedstock.

This would enable the starch industry to use greener reagent that would lead to a significantly reduced waste stream. It would also enable the chemical industry producing this reagent to reduce its carbon footprint. Consumers would benefit by a more environmentally friendly process for starch derivatives that are used in consumer products. The scientific community benefits from this project by the increased knowledge of chemical conversion technologies towards biobased chemicals.

If successful, the application potential is large: besides above-mentioned technical applications, the biobased reagents may also be used for other products like coatings, sequestering agents for detergents or personal care products or in the derivatisation of other polysaccharides besides starch, like cellulose or inulin.
