Summary
It is widely recognized that good quality vegetables seed makes an essential contribution to the livelihood of smallholder farmers in developing countries and the availability of affordable fresh vegetables necessary for good health. However, the empirical evidence basis for this relationship remains weak, as only few studies have quantified the impact of quality vegetable seed. Strengthening the evidence basis for the impact of quality vegetable seed is important to guide donor investment and policy-making. Strengthening the evidence basis is also important for East-West Seed and Enza Zaden, as these companies have worked for decades to improve the lives of smallholder farmers globally through quality seed and complementary extension. The objective of this project is therefore to generate robust evidence for the economic and societal impact of quality vegetable seed.
