Effectively managing fish production systems to land-based recirculating aquaculture systems and selectively breeding fish within them require massive data collection, which is currently unfeasible. This project will develop design specifications and assemble a team from the partner companies, WUR, and NIWA to formulate a strategic research and development plan and funding proposals to design and build an automated, high-throughput phenotyping system for RAS farmed fish. We aim to integrate the acquisition of multi-spectral, x-ray, and ultrasound images and artificial intelligence analysis tools to make it possible, for the first time, to incorporate health-, welfare-, and feed conversion efficiency-related traits into the management and selective breeding of fish. With this technology fish producers and breeders can make land-based fish farming more profitable, sustainable, and humane.
