Samenvatting

In animal-friendly housing systems, monitoring health and welfare status of animals are highly demanding tasks for the farmer in time, health and complexity, and is usually combined with routine actions such as collecting floor eggs and removing dead animals. Therefore, poultry farmers will benefit from automated extra sensing to gather information about bird behaviour and health, while also robots are desired for simple and heavy tasks, in order to relieve the farmer. A multi-layer support system will be developed for commercial poultry houses to assist the poultry farmer in his daily tasks by developing and integrating systems for flock observation and robots for observation of health and behaviour and for performing routine daily tasks. In this project information is being gathered from poultry to identify needs and wishes for such a high-tech support system and collaboration will be setup to join forces of poultry farmers, animal researchers, robotic specialists and equipment companies in order to write a full PPS-proposal to setup new innovative research to make this support system a reality.
